Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal nail infections (also called onychomycosis) are a very common problem that affect both toenails and fingernails—though they show up in toes far more often. They’re caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments, like sweaty shoes, public showers, and swimming pools.

Fungal nail infections are often treated with oral or topical medication from your GP. However, they are traditionally difficult to treat, can take many months to see any positive results or come with possible side effects.

What do fungal nail infections look like?

  • Nails may become thickened, brittle, or crumbly
  • Color changes are common — from yellow to brown or even white
  • In some cases, nails may lift from the nail bed or give off an unpleasant odor

Why do fungal nail infections happen?

  • Wearing tight or non-breathable footwear
  • Walking barefoot in damp communal areas
  • Having minor nail injuries
  • Weakened immune system or circulation issues

Why treat fungal nail infections?

Aside from being unsightly, fungal nail infections can get worse over time. They may spread to other nails or surrounding skin, causing discomfort, pain, or secondary infections.

Good news: Treatments like laser therapy can effectively target the fungus, helping restore nails to a healthier, clearer appearance.

Fungal Nail Laser Treatment

The laser, which is safe, fast and pain free, kills the fungus and helps to stimulate nail growth.

Targeting the affected nail and the lower layer of the skin and nail bed, the laser creates heat under the skin’s surface. This heat then sufficiently destroys the dermatophytes allowing the nail plate to return to normal.

Results using laser treatment – typically patients will see results within 4 weeks of their initial treatment. Most patients require a minimum of two treatments and we recommend one treatment per month.

You must not be taking oral or topical medication for the fungus infection for 2 weeks prior to the laser treatment.

Nails should be free from polish for your appointment and post procedure you should keep nails clean and short. If treatment is on toes – wear fresh socks!
